Which nerve is best for tracking muscle relaxation in surgery?
NCT ID NCT06553131
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares using the median nerve versus the ulnar nerve to monitor how relaxed a patient's muscles are during surgery. Researchers will measure the muscle response to nerve stimulation in 32 adults having elective surgery. The goal is to see if the median nerve works as well as the commonly used ulnar nerve.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Neuromuscular transmission monitoring device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that the median nerve is a reliable alternative for monitoring muscle relaxation during surgery, giving doctors more flexibility.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 32 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. It is not testing a new treatment, just comparing monitoring methods.
