MDMA therapy trial targets PTSD and alcoholism in veterans
NCT ID NCT07118839
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether MDMA-assisted therapy can help veterans with both PTSD and alcohol use disorder. Eighty veterans will receive either a full dose of MDMA or a low-dose placebo during three therapy sessions. Researchers will measure changes in PTSD symptoms and drinking habits over about 16 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
MDMA (midomafetamine hydrochloride)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a new treatment option for veterans struggling with both PTSD and alcohol use disorder, potentially reducing symptoms and drinking.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase trial with only 80 participants. The active placebo design may limit clear results, and MDMA has known risks like increased heart rate and psychological distress.
