New weekly shot aims to turn back the clock on prediabetes

NCT ID NCT07654062

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a once-weekly injectable drug called mazdutide can help adults with prediabetes achieve normal blood sugar levels. About 150 participants will receive either a low dose, a higher dose, or a placebo for 24 weeks, along with diet and exercise advice. The main goal is to see how many people return to healthy blood sugar after treatment, with a 24-week follow-up to check if the effects last.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

mazdutide (a once-weekly injectable drug that activates GLP-1 and glucagon receptors to lower blood sugar and weight)

What this could lead to

If successful, mazdutide could offer a new option to help people with prediabetes return to normal blood sugar levels and potentially prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-phase trial (Phase 4) with only 150 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug may cause side effects like nausea or injection-site reactions, and benefits may not last after treatment stops.
