Could a simple painkiller combo replace strong opioids during surgery?
NCT ID NCT06015711
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether giving patients a combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen (called Maxigesic) before surgery can reduce the amount of remifentanil, a strong opioid, needed during the operation. The trial will include 96 adults aged 19-60 who are scheduled for surgery under general anesthesia. Researchers will measure how much remifentanil is used and also track painkiller needs after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Maxigesic (a combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could help reduce opioid use during surgery, potentially lowering side effects and risk of dependence.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 96 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The benefit may be small or not seen at all.
