Mom's voice may boost preemie brain waves
NCT ID NCT05391633
First seen Nov 01, 2025
Summary
This study tested whether playing a recording of a mother's voice to premature babies in the NICU could affect their brain activity, measured by EEG. Fourteen infants born between 28 and 32 weeks gestation participated. The goal was to see if this simple intervention might serve as a marker for developmental risk, but the study was terminated early, so results are limited.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Recorded maternal voice
What this could lead to
If this approach shows changes in brain activity, it could point toward a simple, low-cost way to support brain development in preterm infants.
What could go wrong
This was a very small, early study that was terminated early, so results are limited. It only measured a brain activity marker, not long-term development, so any benefits are uncertain.
