Ultrasound may make checking breathing tubes safer for kids
NCT ID NCT02822846
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether lung ultrasound can accurately confirm that a breathing tube is in the right place in children. 79 intubated children received both an ultrasound and a chest X-ray. The goal was to see if ultrasound could replace X-ray, avoiding radiation exposure. Results will show how well ultrasound detects correct tube position.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
lung ultrasound
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a faster, radiation-free way to check breathing tube placement in children.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 79 children. Ultrasound may not be as reliable as X-ray in all cases, and results may not apply to adults.
