A smartphone tool may help cystic fibrosis patients survive the lung transplant waitlist
NCT ID NCT04687475
First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Jul 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether a home monitoring tool — combining daily lung function measurements and symptom surveys — can help doctors better manage cystic fibrosis patients who are waiting for a lung transplant. The tool sends data to the clinic, which may trigger earlier adjustments to a patient's priority score for transplant. Ten adults with cystic fibrosis who are already listed for a lung transplant will use the tool and be followed to see if it improves their chances of getting a transplant in time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- a clinical tool combining home spirometry and symptom surveys
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this tool could help doctors prioritize lung transplants for cystic fibrosis patients who need them most, potentially reducing deaths while on the waiting list.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small pilot study with only 10 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The tool depends on patients having and using a home spirometer, which may limit its use.
