Lung cancer 'Mini-Tumors' grown in lab could guide personalized therapy
NCT ID NCT03655015
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study collects tumor samples from 150 lung cancer patients to grow miniature versions called organoids in the lab. Researchers will test how these organoids respond to chemotherapy and targeted drugs, and compare that to how the patient's actual tumor responds. They will also look at circulating tumor cells in the blood. The goal is to build a biobank that can help predict which treatments work best for each person.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors predict which lung cancer treatments will work best for each patient, leading to more personalized care.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage observational study, not a treatment trial. The organoids may not perfectly mimic real patient responses, and results may not change current care for years.
