Double transplant trial aims to fix lungs and blood in one go

NCT ID NCT03500731

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing a new approach for people with severe lung disease (like pulmonary fibrosis or COPD) who also have bone marrow failure. First, participants receive a lung transplant to restore breathing. Then, about 8 weeks later, they get a bone marrow transplant using their own stem cells, along with drugs to prepare the body. The goal is to see if this sequence is safe and can restore both lung and blood function. Only 8 adults aged 18-60 are being enrolled.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

CD3/CD19 negative hematopoietic stem cells, rituximab, alemtuzumab, fludarabine, thiotepa, G-CSF, hydroxyurea

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could offer a way to treat both lung failure and bone marrow failure in one combined procedure, potentially improving survival and quality of life.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small trial (phase 1/2) with only 8 participants. The procedures carry high risks, including infection, organ rejection, and death. It is not yet known if the benefits outweigh these risks.
