New drug aims to shield kidneys from surgery damage

Summary
This study is testing whether an experimental drug called LSALT peptide can prevent or lessen kidney injury in patients having major heart surgery using a heart-lung machine. About 240 adult patients at higher risk for kidney problems will receive either the drug or a placebo (saltwater) for 5 days, starting before surgery. Researchers will compare how many patients in each group develop kidney injury within a week after their operation.
