Can 10 minutes of intense exercise help stroke patients recover?

NCT ID NCT06998017

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether low-volume high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on a recumbent stepper is safe and doable for people recovering from a stroke in a hospital rehab setting. Fifteen participants will try a 10-minute HIIT session, and researchers will track any side effects, how well they stick with it, and whether they enjoy it. The goal is to see if this type of exercise can be a practical part of inpatient stroke rehab.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Low-volume high-intensity interval training on a total body recumbent stepper

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that short bursts of intense exercise are safe and doable for stroke patients during rehab, potentially improving recovery.

What could go wrong

This is a very small early-phase study with only 15 participants, so results may not apply to all stroke patients. It focuses on safety and feasibility, not on proving any health benefits.
