New surgery technique could improve survival in recurrent throat cancer
NCT ID NCT04425265
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two surgical techniques for treating nasopharyngeal cancer that has come back after radiation. 500 participants will be randomly assigned to receive either low-temperature plasma ablation or high-frequency electrocautery. The goal is to see which method leads to better survival without the cancer returning.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Plasma radiofrequency ablation (low-temperature) and electrocautery block resection (high-frequency) surgical procedures
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a better surgical option for patients with recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma, potentially improving survival and reducing complications.
What could go wrong
This is a single-center trial with no blinding, and the results may not apply to all patients. The procedures are invasive and carry risks like bleeding or infection.
