Ultrasound zaps brain pathways in quest to understand psychiatric disorders
NCT ID NCT07099950
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study uses low-intensity focused ultrasound to temporarily change activity in deep brain areas involved in mood and anxiety. Researchers will scan the brains of 66 healthy adults before and after ultrasound to see how it alters communication between key regions. The goal is to learn how this technique might one day be used to treat conditions like depression or anxiety.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
low-intensity focused ultrasound
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help researchers understand how to use ultrasound to adjust brain circuits, potentially leading to new treatments for psychiatric disorders.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study in healthy volunteers, not patients. It only measures brain activity changes, not clinical benefits, and may not translate into effective therapies.
