ICU recovery mystery: could metabolism hold the key?

NCT ID NCT07170527

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study follows 200 ICU survivors for 12 months to understand why some recover well while others struggle, even if they were healthy before. Researchers will measure metabolic changes during critical illness and track physical function, muscle strength, and body composition over time. The goal is to identify patterns that could lead to better support for recovery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help doctors predict which ICU patients will struggle with recovery and point toward new ways to improve physical function after critical illness.

What could go wrong

This is an early, observational study that does not test any treatment. It may not find clear links between metabolism and recovery, and results may not apply to all ICU patients.
