Blood markers may forecast heart and kidney trouble years after ICU kidney failure

NCT ID NCT07596407

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study follows 412 patients who survived severe acute kidney injury in the ICU to see if two biomarkers (galectin-3 and CD146) can predict future heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, or death. Researchers will track patients' health through phone interviews and medical records. The goal is to better identify who needs close follow-up after leaving the hospital.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors identify ICU survivors at highest risk for future heart or kidney complications, allowing earlier monitoring and preventive care.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study that does not test a new treatment. The biomarkers may not prove useful for predicting outcomes, and results may not apply to all patients.
