Cold virus engineered to attack pancreatic cancer shows promise in early trial
NCT ID NCT02705196
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a modified cold virus called LOAd703 in 51 people with pancreatic cancer. The virus is designed to infect and kill cancer cells while also boosting the immune system. It was given alongside standard chemotherapy, and in some cases an immunotherapy drug, to see if it is safe and helps shrink tumors.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
delolimogene mupadenorepvec (LOAd703), an oncolytic virus that infects and kills cancer cells and stimulates the immune system
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new treatment option for pancreatic cancer by combining a virus that kills cancer cells with standard chemotherapy.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase trial with only 51 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The virus can cause fever and other immune reactions, and it is not yet approved by the FDA.
