Exercise as medicine: HIIT may soothe lipedema pain

NCT ID NCT06558851

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether 12 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can reduce pain and improve quality of life in 62 women with lipedema, a chronic fat disorder causing painful leg swelling. Participants will do HIIT three times a week and then switch to usual care, or vice versa. Researchers will measure pain, body fat, and blood markers to see if exercise offers real relief.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

high-intensity interval training (HIIT)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, drug-free way to ease pain and improve daily life for women with lipedema.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 62 participants. Exercise may not reduce pain for everyone, and results may not apply to all women with lipedema.
