Could a green dye and laser light save your gums?
NCT ID NCT07609888
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether adding a light-based antibacterial treatment called photodynamic therapy (PDT) to standard deep cleaning improves gum health in people with moderate gum disease. Thirty adults received standard cleaning on one side of the mouth and standard cleaning plus PDT on the other. PDT uses a green dye and a special laser to kill leftover bacteria without antibiotics. The study measured gum pocket depth, gum attachment, and bleeding at the start and after 3 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Indocyanine green dye and 810 nm diode laser (photodynamic therapy)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, antibiotic-free way to boost the effectiveness of standard gum disease treatment and reduce the need for further procedures.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The added benefit of light therapy over standard cleaning alone may be modest or not clinically significant.
