Can light zap eyelid mites? new trial investigates

NCT ID NCT07169461

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests two types of light therapy—low-level light and intense pulse light—to kill Demodex mites that cause eyelid inflammation (blepharitis). 88 adults with confirmed mite infections will receive one of four treatments: sham, blue light alone, IPL alone, or both. All will also do warm compresses and lid scrubs. The main goal is to see if mite counts drop after one month.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Low-level light therapy (blue light) and intense pulse light (IPL) devices

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a non-drug, non-invasive way to control Demodex mites and improve symptoms of blepharitis.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 88 people. The treatments may not work better than sham therapy, and results may not apply to everyone with the condition.
