New Light-Measuring tool tested in cancer surgery

NCT ID NCT03678350

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-phase trial tested a light-measuring system used during photodynamic therapy (PDT) for people with malignant mesothelioma, non-small cell lung cancer, or other pleural cancers. Nine participants received the drug porfimer sodium, which becomes active when exposed to light, during surgery. The goal was to see if measuring the light dose could help doctors decide when to stop or continue treatment, and to check for side effects.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

porfimer sodium (Photofrin)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors deliver the right amount of light during photodynamic therapy, potentially improving treatment for pleural cancers.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small Phase I trial with only 9 participants, focused on safety and light measurement, not on curing the disease. The approach may not work for everyone and carries risks from the light-activated drug.
