Shedding light on dry eye: new study tests IPL and LED mask therapies
NCT ID NCT06004895
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looked at how two light-based treatments—intense pulsed light (IPL) and low-level light therapy (LLLT)—work for dry eye disease caused by clogged oil glands. Twenty-six participants received four treatment sessions, with one eye getting IPL plus LLLT and the other getting a sham IPL plus LLLT. The goal was to measure changes in tear stability and dry eye symptoms over three months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Intense pulsed light (IPL) and low-level light therapy (LLLT) devices
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help explain how light-based treatments relieve dry eye symptoms and improve oil gland function, leading to better targeted therapies.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study (26 people) focused on understanding how the treatments work, not on proving they are effective. Results may not apply to everyone with dry eye.
