Lidocaine injection reveals tinnitus brain networks in tiny pilot

NCT ID NCT04192773

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-phase study will give IV lidocaine to 40 adults with or without tinnitus and hearing loss, then use fMRI to see how the drug changes brain activity. Participants act as their own control, comparing scans before and after the infusion. The goal is to identify neural networks linked to chronic tinnitus, not to test a treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

IV lidocaine

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help identify brain networks involved in tinnitus, pointing toward future targeted treatments.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small pilot study (40 people) with no control group. It is designed to explore brain changes, not to test a treatment, so results may not lead to any therapy.
