Could a common numbing drug ease colon cancer surgery recovery?
NCT ID NCT06923787
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether giving lidocaine (a numbing drug) through a vein during colon cancer surgery can reduce pain, lower the need for strong painkillers, and help the bowel start working sooner. One hundred adults undergoing laparoscopic colon cancer surgery will be randomly assigned to receive lidocaine or a placebo. The goal is to see if this simple addition can improve recovery without major side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
lidocaine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to improve recovery after colon cancer surgery by reducing pain and opioid use.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial. Lidocaine may not reduce pain or opioid use more than placebo, and results may not apply to all patients.
