First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

This study tests whether transplanting a donor voice box (larynx) can safely restore voice, swallowing, and breathing in people with severe larynx damage or who have had their larynx removed. Ten adults will receive the transplant and be followed for five years. The trial is currently on hold.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

larynx allograft (donor voice box)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a way to restore natural voice, swallowing, and breathing for people who have lost larynx function due to injury or surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small study (10 people) that is currently suspended. The procedure carries major risks, including rejection of the transplant and the need for lifelong immune-suppressing drugs.
