Keyhole surgery for stomach cancer: faster recovery or not?
NCT ID NCT02248519
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compared two types of surgery for stomach cancer: laparoscopic (keyhole) and open surgery. The goal was to see if keyhole surgery leads to a shorter hospital stay and fewer complications. The trial included 210 patients with resectable stomach cancer and is now complete.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
surgery (laparoscopic or open gastrectomy)
What this could lead to
If laparoscopic gastrectomy proves better, it could become the standard, less invasive surgical option for gastric cancer patients, leading to faster recovery and fewer complications.
What could go wrong
This is a completed trial with 210 patients, but results may not apply to all gastric cancer types or populations. Laparoscopic surgery may not be feasible in all cases and could require conversion to open surgery.
