AI stethoscope aims to cut unnecessary antibiotics in kids

NCT ID NCT07631377

First seen Jun 19, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether an AI-enhanced digital stethoscope can improve pneumonia diagnosis in children aged 2 to 59 months who have cough or breathing trouble. About 350 children will be randomly assigned to standard care or care plus the AI stethoscope. An independent panel of doctors will determine if pneumonia is actually present. The goal is to see if the AI tool helps target antibiotics more accurately, reducing unnecessary use and fighting antibiotic resistance.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to more accurate pneumonia diagnosis in children, reducing unnecessary antibiotic use and helping fight antibiotic resistance.

What could go wrong

This is a single-site study in South Africa, and results may not apply to other settings. The AI results are not used in patient care, so direct benefit to participants is limited.
