Heart pouch closure may cut stroke risk in atrial fibrillation patients
NCT ID NCT06405750
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether closing a small pouch in the heart (the left atrial appendage) during open-heart surgery can help prevent strokes in people with atrial fibrillation. Researchers will analyze heart tissue, blood, and ECG recordings from 1000 participants to find out who is most at risk for blood clots. The goal is to better identify and protect patients from stroke.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
left atrial appendage closure (a surgical procedure)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that routinely closing the heart's auricle during open-heart surgery reduces stroke risk in people with atrial fibrillation.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a randomized trial, so it cannot prove cause and effect. The procedure itself carries surgical risks like bleeding or infection.
