Can a gut pill stop kidney disease from becoming chronic?
NCT ID NCT07182422
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether Kremezin (AST-120), a pill that absorbs toxins in the gut, can help kidneys recover after acute injury. Researchers will give 100 adults with acute kidney disease either Kremezin plus standard care or standard care alone for 14 days. They will measure toxin levels and kidney function over 6 months to see if the drug prevents progression to chronic kidney disease.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
AST-120 (Kremezin), an oral medication that absorbs toxins in the gut
What this could lead to
If it works, this could help prevent acute kidney disease from turning into long-term chronic kidney disease and reduce heart-related complications.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 100 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment is short-term (14 days) and may not have lasting benefits.
