New implant aims to make kidney dialysis access more reliable

NCT ID NCT02513303

Summary

This study tested whether a small, drug-releasing implant placed during surgery could improve the success of creating a usable dialysis access point (called a fistula) in the arm. It involved 269 people with kidney failure who needed to start or were recently on dialysis. Researchers compared patients who received the implant during fistula surgery to those who had standard surgery without it, checking if the fistula was ready for dialysis six months later.
