New sedation approach tested to ease ICU trauma

NCT ID NCT06767358

Summary

This study is testing if adding a low-dose ketamine infusion to standard sedation helps adult patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) who are on breathing machines. Researchers want to see if ketamine can reduce delirium, lower the need for other strong pain and sedative drugs, and help patients spend less time on the ventilator. The trial will involve 54 patients across several Canadian hospitals, comparing ketamine to a placebo (saltwater) infusion, with neither patients nor doctors knowing which treatment is given.
