200 patients join effort to unlock secrets of progressive eye disease

NCT ID NCT05676580

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study follows 200 people with keratoconus, a condition that thins and bulges the cornea, over two years. Researchers will track changes in vision, corneal shape, and thickness, and analyze tear proteins to better understand how the disease progresses. Some participants will receive standard treatments like cross-linking surgery or corneal rings, while others will only be advised to avoid eye rubbing. The goal is to identify risk factors and improve future treatment decisions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help doctors better predict how keratoconus will progress and identify who might benefit from early surgery.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It will not test a new therapy, and results may not lead to immediate changes in care.
