New vaginal film uses antibodies to block sperm – first human trial underway
NCT ID NCT07222020
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This early-stage trial tests whether a vaginal film containing an anti-sperm antibody (KB15A) is safe for healthy women. Twenty-four participants will receive either the active film or a placebo, first as single doses and then daily for 14 days. Researchers will monitor for side effects and measure how much antibody stays in the vagina and enters the bloodstream. The goal is to see if this approach could one day become a new, hormone-free contraceptive.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
KB15A monoclonal antibody vaginal film
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a new, non-hormonal contraceptive option that women can use on demand.
What could go wrong
This is a very early Phase 1 safety trial with only 24 participants. It is not designed to test whether the film actually prevents pregnancy, and many early-stage ideas never advance.
