Summary
Doctors in the ICU need to know if a patient needs more fluids, and they often use ultrasound to check a large belly vein called the inferior vena cava. But that view can be hard to get. This study tests whether measuring a vein in the neck, the right internal jugular vein, works just as well and is faster. Researchers will compare the neck vein measurement with the standard one in 82 adults on breathing machines, and also see how both relate to other fluid-monitoring signals.

Who is studied
The study population consists of adult patients aged 18 years or older who are admitted to the intensive care unit and receiving invasive mechanical ventilation at the time of assessment. Eligible patients have PVI, PPV, and SVV measurements available and technically adequate right internal jugular vein and inferior vena cava ultrasonographic measurements obtained during the same assessment session. Patients with cardiac arrhythmia or unavailable or incomplete hemodynamic or ultrasonographic measurements are excluded.
