Can a quick ultrasound prevent dangerous blood pressure drops in hip surgery?

NCT ID NCT07669376

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether an ultrasound measurement of a large vein near the heart (the inferior vena cava) can predict when a patient's blood pressure will drop dangerously during hip replacement surgery. Researchers will measure this vein's flexibility before cement is used to secure the new hip joint. The goal is to find a cutoff value that warns doctors ahead of time. Thirty adults having elective hip replacement under general anesthesia will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could give doctors a simple ultrasound test to predict and prevent severe blood pressure drops during hip replacement surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early study with only 30 participants. The ultrasound measure may not reliably predict blood pressure changes in all patients.
