New shot at stopping ICU brain fog

NCT ID NCT04742673

Summary

This study tested whether an intravenous form of the drug guanfacine could help treat delirium (acute brain confusion) in patients who are critically ill in the ICU. The goal was to see if the treatment could reduce the number of days patients experienced delirium or coma, help them get off breathing machines sooner, and potentially prevent long-term thinking and memory problems after their illness. Researchers compared the IV guanfacine against a placebo in 46 patients.
