IUD after C-Section may raise scar risk, study finds
NCT ID NCT07264933
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at 750 first-time mothers who had a C-section and wanted birth control. Half got a copper IUD placed right after delivery, and the other half took progesterone-only pills. The goal was to see if the IUD increased the chance of a scar defect (niche) in the uterus. Researchers used ultrasound to check for these defects over 6 months. The results help women and doctors choose the safest postpartum contraception after a C-section.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Copper T380A intrauterine device and progesterone-only pills
What this could lead to
If it works, this could help women choose safer contraception after a C-section, reducing the risk of uterine scar problems.
What could go wrong
This is a completed study, but it only looks at scar formation, not long-term health. Results may not apply to all women or other types of IUDs.
