Can a pill beat dandruff? oral antifungal takes on stubborn scalp condition
NCT ID NCT07734441
First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Jul 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether oral itraconazole, taken as a pulse therapy over six months, works better than a standard ketoconazole shampoo for moderate to severe scalp seborrheic dermatitis. Eighty participants aged 14 to 70 will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatments. Researchers will measure changes in severity scores, relapse rates, and patient satisfaction to see if the oral option offers lasting relief.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- oral itraconazole (pulse therapy) and topical 2% ketoconazole shampoo
- What this could lead to
- If itraconazole proves more effective, it could offer a new oral treatment option for stubborn scalp seborrheic dermatitis with fewer relapses.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small early-phase trial, so results may not apply broadly. Itraconazole carries risks of liver toxicity and drug interactions, and oral antifungals are not first-line for this condition.
