New Artery-Blocking technique could make rectal surgery safer
NCT ID NCT06236633
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a new step before rectal cancer surgery: temporarily blocking the main artery to the lower colon with a tiny coil. The idea is to 'precondition' the tissue so it handles surgery better, potentially reducing leaks and other complications. 30 patients with rectal cancer will be enrolled to see if the procedure is safe and may improve recovery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ischemic preconditioning by embolization of the inferior mesenteric artery
What this could lead to
If this works, it could lead to a safer surgical approach for rectal cancer, reducing serious complications like fistulas.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small pilot study with only 30 people. The procedure itself carries rare but serious risks like bleeding or damage to the artery. It may not show clear benefits.
