Plant-Based iron absorption study could change how we treat iron deficiency

NCT ID NCT07143890

First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 14 times

Summary

This study looks at how well iron-deficient women absorb iron from two plant-based sources (iron chlorophyllin and soy hemoglobin) compared to standard iron supplements. 45 women with low iron stores but not anemic will consume these iron sources in water or maize porridge. Researchers will measure iron absorption from blood samples taken 14 days later. The goal is to find better ways to fortify foods with iron.
