Radiologists take the lead: can deep sedation replace general anesthesia?
NCT ID NCT07443254
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether interventional radiologists can safely give deep sedation using ketamine, fentanyl, and midazolam for procedures that normally require general anesthesia. Up to 40 adults will participate. The main goal is to see if the procedure can be completed without stopping early or needing an anesthesiologist to take over.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ketamine, fentanyl, midazolam
What this could lead to
If successful, this could allow more interventional radiology procedures to be done without general anesthesia, reducing wait times and freeing up anesthesia providers.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early feasibility study with only 40 participants. The sedation may not work for everyone, and there is a risk of side effects or needing to switch to general anesthesia.
