One-Time radiation during lumpectomy may simplify breast cancer treatment
NCT ID NCT04994067
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This registry study is following 500 women with early-stage breast cancer who receive a single dose of radiation directly to the tumor site during surgery (IORT). The goal is to see how well this approach controls cancer locally and what side effects occur. Participants are women aged 45 and older with low-risk breast cancer who are candidates for breast-conserving surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Intra-operative radiation therapy (IORT) using the IntraBeam system
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could confirm IORT as a safe and effective option for partial breast irradiation, reducing the need for multiple radiation sessions.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational registry, not a controlled trial, so results may not prove cause and effect. Side effects like radiation toxicity are possible, and long-term outcomes are still being tracked.
