New scan could predict if radioactive iodine will work for thyroid cancer
NCT ID NCT03647358
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new PET scan using a special form of iodine called iodine-124 to measure how much radioactive iodine thyroid cancer tumors absorb. The goal is to help doctors decide if standard radioactive iodine therapy is likely to help. About 60 adults with metastatic thyroid cancer will receive an oral dose of iodine-124 and undergo up to four PET scans over several days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Iodine-124
What this could lead to
If successful, this imaging test could help doctors decide whether radioactive iodine therapy will work for each patient, avoiding ineffective treatments.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The test is for diagnosis only and does not directly treat cancer.
