Scientists grow Mini-Guts to unravel bowel disease mysteries

NCT ID NCT02874365

First seen Jan 09, 2026 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study took small tissue samples from the intestines of 110 people with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's or ulcerative colitis), familial adenomatous polyposis, or healthy controls. Researchers grew these samples into mini-organs called organoids to study how intestinal stem cells behave and how certain genes are turned on or off. The goal was to better understand these diseases, not to test a new treatment.
