Can intermittent fasting help after weight loss surgery?
NCT ID NCT06766747
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This completed study tested whether intermittent fasting (eating very little 2 days a week) works better than daily calorie restriction for people who regained weight after bariatric surgery. Sixteen adults who had surgery at least a year ago followed one of the two diets for 12 weeks. Researchers measured weight loss and body fat changes to see which approach was more effective.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Intermittent fasting (alternate-day, 75% calorie restriction 2 days per week) and continuous calorie restriction
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a practical dietary option for people who regain weight after bariatric surgery, without needing to count calories every day.
What could go wrong
This is a very small study (16 people) with no blinding, so results may not apply widely. The weight loss phase is only 12 weeks, so long-term effects are unknown.
