Can weekly meetups between lonely seniors and at-risk kids help both?

NCT ID NCT05551234

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study explores whether regular, supervised meetings between socially isolated seniors (65+) and disadvantaged children (kindergarten to elementary school) can reduce loneliness in seniors and improve children's school behavior. Over 7 months, pairs meet weekly for 1.5 hours, with activities chosen by the senior or a facilitator. Researchers measure loneliness in seniors and behavioral changes in children using standard questionnaires.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost way to ease social isolation in seniors and support children's social development.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 10 participants, so results may not apply to larger groups. The benefits may be modest or not last beyond the program.
