Aggressive statins may halt artery clogging in young hearts
NCT ID NCT06896708
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This nationwide trial tests whether intensive cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins plus ezetimibe or PCSK9 inhibitors) can slow plaque buildup in heart arteries better than standard statin therapy. About 766 adults aged 18–60 with chronic coronary syndrome and moderate artery blockages will be randomly assigned to one of two treatment strategies. The goal is to see if driving LDL cholesterol below 1.0 mmol/L prevents plaque progression and reduces heart attacks or hospitalizations.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Intensive lipid-lowering therapy (atorvastatin or rosuvastatin plus ezetimibe or PCSK9 inhibitor)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that aggressive cholesterol lowering slows or stops artery plaque progression, reducing heart attack risk in younger patients.
What could go wrong
This is an open-label trial (no placebo), so results may be biased. The intensive regimen may cause more side effects like muscle pain or liver issues, and long-term benefits are not yet proven.
