German hospitals pool infection data and samples to speed future research
NCT ID NCT06879184
First seen Sep 29, 2026 · Last updated Sep 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers at university hospitals across Germany are building a large observational cohort of adults and children hospitalized with infections. The study collects standardized clinical data, pathogen samples, and biosamples at the start and end of each hospital stay. A pre-screening program tracks infection-related admissions to help detect pathogen changes early. The goal is to create a shared resource that other scientists can use to study disease severity, spread, and outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If the cohort succeeds, researchers could gain a shared resource for studying how infections spread, how severe they become, and which treatments work. It may also help hospitals spot new pathogen trends earlier.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, so it does not test a treatment and cannot prove that any care approach works. The value depends on recruiting enough participants, collecting samples consistently, and whether future researchers can use the data effectively.

Who can take part
This study's own entry requirements. Only the study team can say for certain whether you qualify.
Who is studied
Patients with defined clinical characteristics or presentations/pathogens are included at all participating study sites. Specific clinical characteristics or presentations/pathogens of interest are defined in the specific modules. Based on this master study protocol and the modules, the study teams will identify patients who meet all inclusion and none of the exclusion criteria and will inform them about the study and its objectives. Patients providing written IC will be included in the study.
