Light-Based imaging may cut unnecessary breast biopsies
NCT ID NCT03842358
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 26 times
Summary
This study tested whether adding a special light-based imaging tool (called diffuse optical tomography) to standard ultrasound can help doctors tell the difference between harmless and cancerous breast lumps. The goal was to see if this could reduce the number of women who need a needle biopsy for a benign (non-cancerous) finding, without missing any cancers. About 298 women with breast abnormalities seen on ultrasound took part.
