Microchip implanted in tumors could reveal best drug for each patient
NCT ID NCT05700461
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This early-stage study tests a small implantable device that releases tiny amounts of up to 19 different cancer drugs directly into a kidney tumor. The goal is to see if the device is safe and can help predict which drug works best for each patient. About 20 adults with kidney cancer who are already scheduled for surgery will receive the implant before their tumor is removed.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Implantable Microdevice (IMD) with standard-of-care drugs
What this could lead to
If successful, this device could help doctors quickly identify the most effective drug for each patient's kidney cancer, personalizing treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small pilot study focused on safety and feasibility, not effectiveness. The device may not work as hoped or could cause side effects from implantation.
