Hidden danger: study reveals how severe illness silently cripples your defenses

NCT ID NCT02638779

Summary

This study aimed to understand how severe medical events like septic shock, major trauma, burns, or surgery can weaken a patient's immune system. Researchers followed 552 adult patients and healthy volunteers, taking blood samples to measure immune function over time. The goal was to identify this 'immunosuppression' phase and find simpler tests to predict which patients are at highest risk for developing new infections while in the hospital.
